Shoe sizes can vary between brands. When in doubt, measure your foot length in cm and use that as the most reliable reference.
How to Measure Your Feet
Measure at the end of the day when feet are largest. Stand on paper and trace your foot. Measure from heel to longest toe. Add 0.5-1 cm for comfort. Measure both feet - they're often different sizes.
Understanding Size Systems
US and UK sizes are based on the barleycorn (1/3 inch). EU sizes use the Paris point (2/3 cm). These different base units explain why conversions aren't straightforward. Men's and women's US sizes differ by about 1.5 sizes.
Getting the Right Fit
There should be a thumb's width between your longest toe and the shoe end. The widest part of your foot should align with the widest part of the shoe. Heels shouldn't slip. Shop for shoes in the afternoon when feet are slightly swollen.
