What is Horsepower?

Horsepower (HP) is a unit of power originally defined by James Watt to compare steam engine output to draft horses. One HP equals 745.7 watts or the power to move 550 pounds one foot per second.

Torque vs Horsepower

Torque is rotational force; horsepower is work done over time. Torque gets you moving (acceleration), while horsepower maintains speed. HP = Torque × RPM / 5252.

Measuring Horsepower

Engine dyno measures at the flywheel; chassis dyno measures at the wheels (typically 15-20% less due to drivetrain losses). Factory ratings are engine dyno measurements.
