What are RMDs?
Required Minimum Distributions are mandatory withdrawals from tax-deferred retirement accounts that must begin at a certain age.
RMD rules
RMDs must be taken annually starting at age 73 (SECURE 2.0 Act). The amount is based on your December 31 balance of the previous year divided by a life expectancy factor.
Penalties
If you don't take your RMD, there's a 25% penalty on the amount not withdrawn (reduced from previous 50%). The penalty can be reduced to 10% if corrected timely.
