Common Numbers
Roman Numeral System
Roman numerals use seven symbols: I(1), V(5), X(10), L(50), C(100), D(500), M(1000). Values are added left to right, except when a smaller symbol precedes a larger one (subtraction).
Writing Rules
A symbol can repeat maximum 3 consecutive times. Subtractive symbols can only be I, X, or C. I subtracts from V and X; X subtracts from L and C; C subtracts from D and M.
History and Use
Roman numerals originated in ancient Rome and were used throughout Europe for centuries. Today they're used on clocks, book chapters, sporting events (Super Bowl), and to denote centuries and monarchs.
