How Due Dates Are Calculated
Due dates are typically calculated as 280 days (40 weeks) from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). This method assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.
Due Date Accuracy
Only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date. About 80% are born within 2 weeks of the due date. Early ultrasounds (before 12 weeks) provide the most accurate dating.
Different Calculation Methods
LMP is the standard method. Ultrasound dating is most accurate in the first trimester. IVF dates are precise because conception timing is known. Your provider may adjust your due date based on early ultrasound measurements.
